December 26th and 27th are Official Island Holidays

Since Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, the Cayman Islands government has declared December 26th the official Christmas Day holiday.   Boxing Day, another official island holiday is December 27th.

Boxing Day began in the United Kingdom about 800 years ago, during the Middle Ages.  Servants worked on Christmas Day taking care of and cooking for their masters.  The day after Christmas traditionally became the day servants were given time off  to celebrate with their own families.  The name comes from the gift known as a “Christmas box” the servant would receive on this day from their masters, employers or customers.  Since Grand Cayman is a British overseas territory, the island celebrates Boxing Day along with their British counterparts.

Many restaurants will be serving dinner on Sunday, December 25th.  All businesses will be closed on Monday, December 26th.  As for Tuesday, December 27th, Boxing Day, gas stations and grocery stores will be open for half day.  Usually restaurants are open.  Retail, government offices, and banks will be closed.

For those arriving on Monday, December 26th, Grand Cayman Villas and Condos strongly advise having groceries delivered ahead of time to your villa.   Cayman Shoppers will deliver groceries and spirits.

Happy Holidays from all of us at Grand Cayman Villas and Condos!
